HAUSA TECHNICAL DICTIONARY PROJECT
(Translation of 100,000 words)

Preamble

Languages grow and they die. They grow and expand when it is in use by its native speakers and also promoted as a day to day language.  Languages that are written have brighter future than those that are not written. The most effective strategy of making language grow is by using it as not only a language of day to day activities but also as a language of knowledge. Speakers and researchers must ensure that language is used in schools and in research. Hausa language is one of the fastest growing African language, it is a language that has attracted so much work locally and internationally, it is used in teaching and learning, it is used as a growing internet language, in fact, it is the fastest literary language in Africa with thousands of literary works as well as academic papers. There are academic programmes from bachelors to doctoral degrees in many universities locally and abroad.

As relatively comfortable as Hausa language is, it still faces serious challenges. The numbers and volume of interest on Hausa studies abroad is declining while the use of internet is affecting the language in a special manner. There are challenges. There are also many uncoordinated efforts by academics, independent scholars, organizations and a host of young people. There were attempts at providing translations by research centers and independent translators. There is lack of harmonization and systematic coordination. In the last few years, there were calls for the adaption of Hausa as a language of instruction in primary and secondary schools. There is an inclination of encouraging the translation of sciences into Hausa.

The amount of literature in a language not only determine its standing but also the amount of knowledge its speakers can get and use. With the great achievements made in creating a pool of Hausa readers created by Hausa literary movement, there is the need for a concerted and systematic effort to expand the frontiers of Hausa language, this kind of project requires the participation of Hausa scholars in institutions and independent as well as a pool of volunteers who have something to contribute. The project needs specialists, linguists and translators to help in translating to Hausa from global languages. Consequently, the need to develop a Hausa Technical Dictionary that would translate 100,000 words from different disciplines to Hausa. This is the idea of the Hausa Technical Dictionary Project.
